How to Tame a Monster

Summary

How to Tame a Monster is a short children's story about Lwando, who has a gift for handling his little sister Oyiso — even when she turns into a full-blown monster. Each day of the week brings a new meltdown, and Lwando patiently reads the signs: hunger, tiredness, sadness, a need for quiet. But when Friday arrives and nothing works, Lwando loses his cool too, and suddenly there are two roaring monsters. What happens next reveals something surprisingly simple about anger, empathy, and feeling safe.

Lwando has a little sister named Oyiso. Sometimes she is very cute.

But sometimes she turns into a monster.

That’s okay, because Lwando is a monster tamer.

On Monday, the monster looked angry.

But Lwando knew she was just hungry.

On Tuesday, the monster looked very angry.

But Lwando knew she was just tired.

On Wednesday, the monster looked even angrier.

But Lwando knew she was just sad.

On Thursday, the monster looked furious.

But Lwando knew she just needed some quiet.

But on Friday, nothing worked.

Then there were two monsters.

The monsters got bigger.

RAWWWWWR! GRRRAWWWR!

RAWWWWWR! GRRRAWWWR!

And bigger.

Luckily, Dad is the best monster tamer of all. He knows you can’t tame monsters by being bigger or angrier.

You can only tame monsters by helping them feel safe.
