William Holmes McGuffey (1800–1873) was an American educator, professor, and author best known for compiling the McGuffey Readers — a series of graded school textbooks that became one of the most widely used educational tools in 19th-century America. Born in Pennsylvania and raised on the Ohio frontier, McGuffey devoted much of his life to education, serving as a professor and college president at several institutions, including Ohio University and the University of Virginia. His influence on American literacy and moral education during the 1800s was immense, with estimates suggesting that over 120 million copies of his readers were sold during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
McGuffey’s readers were designed to teach children not only how to read, but also to instill values such as honesty, kindness, diligence, and respect for nature.
