The Star Money

Once upon a time, there was a little girl whose parents were dead. She was so poor that she no longer had a room to live in or a bed to sleep in. Eventually, she had nothing left but the clothes on her back and a handful of bread that a kind soul had given her.

However, she was good and very pious. Abandoned by everyone, she set out into the wide world, trusting in the goodness of God. Then she met a poor man who said, “Oh, give me something to eat, I am so hungry!” She gave him the whole piece of bread and said, “God bless the bread for you,” and continued on her way.

Then a child came along who moaned, “My head is so cold, please give me something to cover it.” So she took off her hood and gave it to the child. When she had walked a little further, she met another child who had no coat and was freezing. So she gave the child her own coat. Further on, someone begged for a dress, so she gave that away too.

When she finally arrived in the forest, it was already dark. There she met another child who asked for a shirt. The good little girl thought to herself, “It’s a dark night and nobody can see you, so you might as well give away your shirt too.” She took it off and gave it away.

And while she stood there with nothing left, suddenly a few stars fell from the sky. These were nothing but real pieces of money. Star Talers! Although she had just given away her shirt, she now had a new shirt made of the very best linen. She collected all the money in it and was rich for the rest of her life!
