Heinrich Hoffman
Heinrich Hoffman was a German physician, writer, and caricaturist who lived in the 19th century. He is best known for his children’s book, “Der Struwwelpeter” (1845), which has become a classic of German children’s literature. The book consists of a series of cautionary tales in verse, featuring misbehaving children who suffer various punishments for their misdeeds.
The stories in “Der Struwwelpeter” are often darkly humorous, and some of them have become famous in their own right, such as “The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb” and “The Story of Fidgety Philip”. The book has been translated into many languages and has become a cultural touchstone in Germany and beyond.
In addition to “Der Struwwelpeter”, Hoffman wrote several other children’s books and was also known for his caricatures and political cartoons. He was an important figure in the German literary and artistic scene of the 19th century, and his work continues to be influential today.
